Not much activity in the oilfields in the summer. Most of the work and all of the exploration is done in the winter, when the tundra is accessible and heavy machinery leaves no trace. About 4,000 people work up here in the pitch dark all winter (1,500 in the summer). They work two weeks on, and are then flown home for two weeks off. They say the upside is that they only work half the year.
The oil is extracted from up to 14,000 feet below the surface. Most is low quality, used in plastics etc.
