The Alaska pipeline, with my shadow in the foreground. I had just seen a grizzly cross the road. A couple of miles back I had crossed the Yukon again and stopped to chat to a security guard, patrolling the pipeline. He warned me about grizzlies and said that a couple of days ago he had rescued someone who had been hiking and was attacked. The bear had bitten the hiker on the cheek and almost killed him!!! I had planned to drive until I was tired and then just pull over and camp. Having heard this, I decided to go on to Coldfoot, of which more later.
Grizzlies are more aggressive in the Arctic than anywhere else, due to the barren landscape and their constant hunger. They prowl vast areas in the search for food.
